Violence

The main concern of process service is, as you might expect, violent recipients of process. Process servers have been assaulted and even murdered by enraged defendants upset about their legal case.

It’s critical to know the recipient’s criminal history and any outstanding charges so you can approach risky defendants safely. If the recipient has a history of violent offenses, never attempt service alone, and consider service in a public location. If the recipient has pending charges, you may be able to catch them at their next court date.

Unfamiliar Surroundings

Another danger of serving is that you may have to visit unfamiliar places to find process recipients. Some locations may be known as hot spots for criminal activity, so it’s critical to research them first if you’re attempting service there.

Always map out your route, including potential points of entry and exit for any buildings you have to enter. Google Maps will be your best friend when planning service in unfamiliar locations.

Insufficient Legal Protections

Process servers are typically categorized as contractors, not employees. Process servers who experience problems while working, such as assault or harrassment, must handle them via the court system. This is slow and inefficient when compared to the arbitration and mediation options offered to most workers.
